Palazzolo Acreide: baroque town above and below – Palazzolo Acreide, Italy
EXPERIENCE
One baroque village, two historic centres. We take you on a discovery of this fascinating history.
The two historic centres of the village gravitate around two basilicas declared by Unesco as World Heritage Sites of the late Baroque in the Val di Noto: the basilica of San Paolo, in the ‘di sotto’ (below) district, the oldest one where Palazzolo Acreide’s medieval history originated; the basilica of San Sebastiano in the ‘di sopra’ (above) district, where the presence of the town intensified after the post-seismic reconstruction following the 1693 earthquake. Along the way, you will discover treasures such as the Church of the Immaculate Conception where the precious Renaissance work of the Madonna and Child by Francesco Laurana is kept; the longest Baroque balcony in Europe in the Cafici – Caruso palace; the Church of the Annunziata with its Baroque portal, explosive though incomplete.
